“For Halloween, it’s been pretty quiet, hasn’t it?” Nicols said.

“Very few kids in this building, Mart. We’ve never been bothered much. Do you have any children?”

“One boy, Tommy we call him, but Thomas really, like you.”

“How old is he?”

“Thirteen going on fourteen.”

“A nice age. Old enough to hold real conversations with, but not yet sure he knows more about everything than his father.”

“You sound like you talk from experience.”

Lee laughed. “Yes, you could say that, my son at university has stopped asking me about anything but when his next cheque is coming.”

“Tommy and I get on fine. We like a lot of the same things, although just lately he’s complained about my ‘mother henning’ him.”

“An occupational hazard for us policemen. We know only too well what are the pitfalls for youngsters, and yet you can’t protect them forever.”

They sat in silence for a short time.

“I really must be going, Thomas. Al will be wondering where I’ve got to ... and if you’ll be carrying me in again.”

“Does your wife worry as much as your constable seems to? I’ve really enjoyed this evening. It isn’t often I find someone with the same taste in literature.”

“Especially among our professional acquaintances. I know. Al’s taste runs to Steven King and lurid whodunits.”

Nicols was almost at the door when the phone rang.

“Excuse me,” Lee said. “What? Where? No, no, I’ll be right there. No, you don’t need to phone Sergeant Nicols, he’s here with me. Hang on. Phone his constable. Send a car to pick him up, he’s at the Sandman. Nicols has their car here.”

Lee hung up, and scowled. “While we were enjoying ourselves, our friendly serial killer has been at work. Let’s go. We’ll leave your car here. You can pick it up later.”

“What do we have?”

“An adult male, throat cut, apparatus hacked off, and a kid. Dead. Someone came across the adult body and thought at first it was a stuffed dummy with one of those ghastly Halloween masks. He kicked it. Turned away to throw up and found the kid.”

“Shit.”

“We’re going to have to put Mansell and Landers on a back-burner for a while, and go all out on this. You’ll need to clear with your boss what your position is. I’d appreciate the help, if my brass agrees.”

“Thanks. I’ll phone Paas tomorrow.”
